Why do I need a port and gear/extension ring?

For those using a mirrorless or DSLR camera, it’s important to note that some lenses require additional components like a port and a gear or extension ring to ensure proper functionality underwater. These accessories allow you to maintain focus and zoom capabilities, giving you full control over your shots beneath the waves.

In that case, you'll need:

  • A port (for your specific lens type)
  • Gear or extension ring (depending on the lens you use)

You need the port charts from the manufacturer of the underwater housing to determine which types of port, gear and ring you require. Of course, the team at UWCameraStore.com can assist you choosing the right items.

Frequently asked questions about underwater housings

How can I prevent condensation inside my underwater housing?

Condensation can occur when there is a temperature difference between the inside and outside of your housing, especially in tropical conditions. Using silica gel sachets helps absorb moisture and reduces the risk of fogging on the inside of the lens port.

How do I check, maintain and prepare the O-ring of my underwater housing?

Before every dive, it is important to carefully inspect the O-ring and make sure it is clean and free from dust, hair or sand. Check for any damage or deformation. Apply a thin layer of grease to keep the O-ring smooth, then properly close the housing to ensure a watertight seal. Before entering the water, always double-check that the O-ring is correctly positioned and that the housing is fully closed. I

Why is rinsing your underwater housing after a dive important?

After every dive, it is important to thoroughly rinse your underwater housing with fresh water. Salt can crystallise and build up around buttons and seals, while sand can get trapped in small openings. This can cause buttons to become stiff or difficult to press, making the housing harder to operate. Rinsing helps remove salt and debris, prevents build-up and ensures that all controls continue to function smoothly.

Are the buttons on your underwater housing hard to press or stuck?

If the buttons become stiff or difficult to press, this is often caused by salt or sand build-up inside the housing. Regular rinsing after use and proper maintenance can prevent this. You can also use our maintenance and service to have your housing checked and cleaned professionally.

What should I do if I don’t use my underwater housing for a long time?

If you are not using your underwater housing for an extended period, it is recommended to remove the O-ring. Store it lightly greased in a clean, cool and dark place. This helps maintain its flexibility and prevents it from drying out or deforming.

Will a newer or older model from the same camera series fit in the same underwater housing?

No, underwater housings are designed for specific camera models. Even within the same series, small differences in size, button placement or design can prevent a proper fit. If your exact camera model is not listed as compatible, the housing will not work correctly.
