Just go diving with your Gopro /action cam in non-tropical waters and you will find out very quickly, that you need lighting for your GoPro to make colorful images. However also in tropical waters you will get better results by using extra light.

Better colors and more contrast by using a video light

With 1 or 2 video lights on your GoPro you will make sure that you will get better colors on your images. There is also more contrast in your image, which makes a subject appear more from the rest of the background. Under water the lighting is most effective by filming the subject on short distance ( 3 meters). Of course for a night dive you cannot miss the video lights on your set !

1 of 2 video lights on your GoPro?

The wide angle of your GoPro is 140 degrees. This is actually too wide to light up with one video light. You will find out, that using 1 video light will give unwanted shadows in your images. When you use 2 lights, in combination with your GoPro, you are able to light up a wider angle and you will prevent shadows in your recordings. Of course you can start with 1 light and see how you like it. Extension with a second light is always possible.

How many lumen does your video light need for a GoPro?

Looking in our product range, there are a lot of powerful lights (high lumen) and a lot of less powerful lights (low lumen). A very powerful light will give more light on a larger distance. However the distance under water to be lighted to gain the color red, will remain the same, no matter how powerful you light is. The maximum distance to your subject to get back the most beautiful colors will remain 1,5 meters. The light has taken off a distance of 1,5 meters to the subject and back (in total 3 meters). On a larger distance the color red already mostly has disappeared from the video light. A powerful light will give you more light but the red shades will be lost on a larger distance.

What is the usefulness/benefit of a very powerful light ?

A light with more lumen will provide more light within the 1,5 meters. Especially in circumstances with more environmental light, you will need a lot of artificial light to get the wanted effect and to gain back the colors. On a larger distance (>1,5 meters) you can light up a subject more (without getting back the red). Also a benefit of a powerful light is that you can dim this to 1000 lumen, which gives you a longer use of your battery than when you use a light of 1000 lumen.
