On Saturday, October 25th, 2025, we hosted the Nauticam Experience Day at Onderwaterhuis.nl in Oud Gastel. A full day dedicated to underwater photography, inspiring stories, and great company. We were honored to welcome Mr. Edward Lai, founder and CEO of Nauticam, who travelled all the way from Hong Kong together with Phoebe Lu to join us for this special event.
A packed room and inspiring sessions
The event drew a full house of underwater photographers and videographers from across the Netherlands and Belgium. The day was divided into a morning and an afternoon session, both filled with presentations, demonstrations, and time for personal questions and interaction with the Nauticam team. The morning started with a captivating talk by Faycal Chabini, who shared his journey from taking his first underwater photos with a GoPro to mastering his craft with a Canon EOS R5 II in a Nauticam housing. His beautiful photo presentation, featuring images from all over the world, was met with great enthusiasm. Next up was Mr. Edward Lai, who gave a fascinating look behind the scenes of Nauticam’s optical design process. He explained how tiny adjustments in lens design can completely change image results and shared the story behind the first SMC-1 macrolens, originally created for photographer Alex Mustard — a collaboration that later led to an award-winning photo in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. Of course, the latest MFO-3 macrolens was also highlighted — and visitors could even test it themselves in the aquarium.
Focus on underwater video
The afternoon featured a presentation by Belgian filmmakers Tommy Vuylsteke and Pieter Germeys of BLUE Motion Pictures. They offered an inspiring look at the teamwork behind their large-scale productions, involving over 150 professionals, and shared impressive behind-the-scenes footage from their shoots. They also discussed their long-time use of Nauticam underwater housings, which they fully trust for their reliability and perfect watertightness.
Great atmosphere and hands-on experience
Throughout the day, Marco Heesbeen, founder of Onderwaterhuis.nl and passionate underwater photographer himself, guided the sessions and ensured everything ran smoothly. Afterward, guests enjoyed some drinks and snacks in the showroom, tested various lenses, and had the opportunity to chat directly with Mr. Lai and the Onderwaterhuis.nl team. It was a day full of inspiration, knowledge sharing, and friendly encounters. One to remember!
Exploring Zeeland with Nauticam
The day after the event, on Sunday, we had the pleasure of showing Mr. Edward Lai and Phoebe Lu some of the beauty of Zeeland. Together we visited several well-known dive sites, including Bergse Diepsluis, Gorishoek, and of course the Oosterscheldekering. It was a wonderful way to end the weekend.
