Dive tanks Bonaire

Planning a holiday and bringing your underwater camera, waterproof camera or underwater housing? Whether you're snorkeling in tropical waters or planning a deep dive, the right preparation ensures a smooth experience and amazing underwater shots. Below are 8 practical tips for stress-free underwater photography.

1. Rinse your underwater housing thoroughly

After use in salt water, always rinse your housing or waterproof camera thoroughly. Fill a container with clean (fresh) water and place the closed housing inside. Press all the buttons underwater to flush out salt and sand between them. This prevents sticky buttons caused by salt or sand buildup.

Check the rinse tanks at your dive center – some may be filled with wetsuit residue and salt. A great tip is to bring a Kraken underwater camera bag. This lets you safely carry your full camera setup to the dive site. After diving, fill the bag with fresh water to rinse your gear on the spot – a reliable clean rinse every time.

2. Bring a spare o-ring

The o-ring is essential to keeping your housing watertight. One tiny nick from your fingernail can compromise the seal. Always carry a spare o-ring. Rubber degrades over time, so replacement is a must. We stock a wide range of o-rings – better safe than sorry!

3. Use silica gel to prevent condensation

Few things are more annoying than a fogged-up lens port! Place silica gel packs inside your housing to absorb moisture. Store them airtight and replace them in time – especially in humid tropical climates. Our silica packs (5.0 x 1.5 cm) fit almost any housing, have high absorption capacity and don’t release any dust.

4. Pack spare batteries for uninterrupted shooting

Running out of battery just as the perfect moment happens? Always pack a charged spare battery so you can swap and continue shooting immediately.

5. Secure your camera while diving

Use a spiral cord or neoprene pouch to safely attach your camera to your dive gear. This helps during ascents or whenever you’re not actively shooting, so you won’t lose your underwater camera.

6. Use a strobe for better color and contrast

An external underwater strobe adds vivid color and clarity to your shots. Lighting from the side avoids illuminating floating debris. Need help choosing a strobe? Check out our strobe selection guide, or browse our used strobe kits.

7. Don’t jump in the water with your camera in hand

The water impact can damage your gear. Jump in first, then have someone hand you the camera or lower it using a rope.

8. Store your housing properly after your holiday

Not using your housing for a while? Remove the o-ring or leave the housing slightly open. Store the o-ring in a dark place with proper grease. Use the right lubricant for your specific housing model.
