Flex arms for modular underwater lighting setups

Flex arms are built from modular segments that snap together to form a custom length. This design lets users create flexible lighting positions suitable for wide-angle and macro photography.

Standard diameters include 1/2 in (≈1.27 cm), 3/4 in (≈1.9 cm) and the older 1/4 in (≈0.64 cm). The choice of diameter affects strength, flexibility and compatibility with accessories.

Components of a flex arm system

A flex arm setup starts with a mounting base that connects to the tray of an underwater housing or to the cold shoe mount. From there, middle segments can be added to adjust the total length.

The final segment of a flex arm carries the connector for accessories. Options include YS fittings or ball adapters, used to hold strobes and video lights securely in place.

Choosing between different diameters

Thicker 3/4 in (≈1.9 cm) arms provide strength for heavier strobes or video lamps. Thinner 1/2 in (≈1.27 cm) arms are lighter and more flexible, making them suitable for compact rigs and travel setups.

Selection depends on the total weight of the lighting equipment and the movement range required. We recommend  ball arms when stronger stability is needed.
