Underwater data connection using a smartphone

The DiveVolk SeaLink is a system designed to transfer mobile data from the water surface to a smartphone used underwater. The smartphone is placed inside a waterproof housing and connected by cable to a floating surface unit. This surface unit receives the mobile signal above water and passes it on to the phone below.

The system is intended for situations where live data, video or communication is required during a dive, within a maximum operating depth of approximately 30 m (98 ft).

Compatible with most smartphones

The underwater housing supplied with the SeaLink set is the DiveVolk SeaTouch Max Plus, a housing that is also widely used separately by divers and snorkellers. A wide range of smartphones can be used by fitting the appropriate adapter.

Adapters for iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 (various versions) are included with the system. If a different smartphone is used, a separate adapter is required.

Full touchscreen operation of the smartphone remains possible underwater. This allows apps and functions that normally require an internet connection to be used while submerged.

System operation

The SeaLink consists of a floating surface communication unit and an underwater housing containing the smartphone. These components are connected by a cable with a maximum length of approximately 30 m (98 ft).

Data transfer between the components takes place via 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (2412–2484 MHz). As long as mobile coverage is available at the surface, the smartphone underwater can send and receive data.

Communication and use cases

SeaLink provides the data connection between underwater and the surface. Video calls, visual communication and text-based messaging are all possible, allowing surface teams to follow the dive and exchange information in real time.

When combined with a full-face diving mask and a communication unit (microphone and speaker, not included), spoken communication with the diver becomes possible via the smartphone connection.

The system can be used for inspection work, documentation, research, education and operational support where real-time underwater visibility is required.
