Why use a dark blue filter on an underwater video light?
A dark blue filter on an underwater video light is used to make the light match the natural blue ambient light underwater. This helps create more natural-looking footage.
Main reasons:
1. Reduce color differences
As you go deeper underwater, colors disappear:
- Red disappears first
- Then orange and yellow
- Blue travels the farthest
A video light normally produces bright white light, while the surrounding water light is mostly blue. A dark blue filter shifts the lamp light toward blue so it blends better with the ambient underwater light.
2. More natural images
Without a filter, the subject illuminated by the light can look very bright or white while the background stays blue.
With a blue filter, the transition between subject and background becomes softer and more natural.
3. Fewer hotspots
The filter also reduces light intensity slightly, which:
- reduces harsh reflections
- prevents overexposed spots in the video.
When is it mainly used?
- Wide-angle underwater video
- Shallow water with lots of ambient light
- When you want the artificial light to match the blue water
When is it usually not used?
-Macro filming
-Night dives
In those cases you want the full white light to restore the natural colors of the subject.
