Frequently asked questions about underwater housings
How do I choose an underwater housing for my camera?
The most important factor is compatibility with your camera model. Most underwater housings are designed for a specific camera body. Once compatibility is confirmed, the choice depends on the housing manufacturer, the depth rating and the accessories required for underwater photography or video. For a more detailed explanation, see our guide on choosing the right underwater housing.
Do all cameras have underwater housings available?
No. Underwater housings are typically produced for popular camera models such as mirrorless cameras, DSLR cameras, compact cameras and action cameras. Some cameras have multiple housing options from different manufacturers, while others may have only one or none available.
Do I need a port for my underwater housing?
If you use a mirrorless or DSLR camera, the housing usually requires a port system. The port forms the front optical element between the lens and the water. The correct port depends on the lens you use. Some setups also require additional components such as extension rings, zoom gears or focus gears so that the lens can be operated through the housing. Compact cameras, action cameras and smartphones normally use housings with a fixed port.
Can I use a smartphone with an underwater housing?
Yes. There are underwater housings designed specifically for smartphones. Some models are universal systems that can fit several phone sizes. Using a dedicated smartphone housing can provide additional protection compared with the water resistance of the phone itself, especially in saltwater environments.
What depth can underwater housings handle?
The depth rating depends on the housing model and manufacturer. Many housings for compact cameras and entry-level systems are rated for recreational diving depths, while professional aluminium housings can be designed for deeper diving. Always check the depth rating specified by the manufacturer before using the housing underwater.
Why do underwater housings have leak detection or vacuum systems?
Some housings include leak detection sensors or vacuum systems that help verify that the housing is properly sealed before entering the water. A vacuum system allows the user to remove air from the housing and confirm that the seals remain airtight. Leak detection sensors monitor moisture inside the housing and can provide a warning if water enters the housing.
