s-TURTLE 3 SMART TTL trigger for Sony

The s-TURTLE SMART 3 is a TTL and manual flash trigger for compatible Sony mirrorless cameras used with underwater strobes. It provides TTL exposure control or manual WL operation through fibre optic or sync cord connections. The SMART 3 hardware adds a user-replaceable higher-capacity battery, USB-C charging and configuration, reinforced switches and an updated output connector. Strobe compatibility can be configured using the PC or Mac software.

Camera compatibility

TTL and manual operation are specified for Sony A72, A7R2, A7S2, A73, A7R3, A7S3, A7R4, A74, A1, A9, A9II, A7C, A7CR, A7CII and 6X00-series cameras. HI+ burst operation has been tested with the A74, A1, A7R5 and A9II.

Strobe compatibility

As of August 2026, supported TTL strobes include Ikelite DS160 and DS230; Seaflash 60D and 160D; Inon Z240 and Z330; and Sea&Sea YS-D1, YS-D2J, YS-D3, YS-D3 DUO and D130R.

Compatibility also includes Subtronic 270; Retra PRO X, PRO MAX and MAXI; AOI Intelli Strobe; Backscatter HF-1, MF-3 and AF-1; and APOLLO III V2.0 and APOLLO S. Supported models can change with software updates, so the PC or Mac configuration software should be checked for the intended camera and strobe combination.

Manual WL and HSS operation

Manual WL mode provides flash control without a preflash and supports first-curtain, second-curtain and strobe/multiflash operation. HSS is available in manual WL mode when used with a compatible strobe. TTL and manual WL modes can be selected through the camera menu, including while the camera is installed in an underwater housing with access to the required controls.

Battery and configuration

The user-replaceable battery has three times the capacity specified for the previous SMART 1 and SMART 2 versions. Pressing the SMART button indicates battery status with four flashes for 100%, three for 75%, two for 50% and one for 25%. USB-C is used for charging and computer configuration.
