The operation of the UCS-Q1 is kept simple with only two push buttons and a rotary knob. The knob controls the power setting; the maximum brightness is set to number 7 or the equivalent of guide number 22. By keeping the flash on the manual function only, it is easy to obtain the desired brightness when used with an automatic compact camera. Simply adjust the brightness of the flash to the exposure of the camera. The flash has a very useful illumination angle of 85 degrees with the diffuser on.

The left button activates the Led focus light, which has 3 strength settings. The different strength settings can be obtained by pressing the button. The highest setting is at 700 lumens which is bright enough for macro shots or even as a flashlight underwater. The continuous light also works as a focus light, allowing you to focus faster and determine the desired flash position. In keeping with the concept of "My First Strobe", the simplicity aspect extends to use and maintenance. The dials and push buttons are clearly labelled, making them easy to operate, even with gloves on.

The battery compartment is secured with a screw cap sealed with two o-rings to prevent accidental leakage. Should the battery compartment fill up, this will not affect the electronic part, as the two are kept separate, thus preventing a high repair bill. The flash is powered by two 18650 lithium batteries, which provide up to 1800 flashes on a single charge and provide a constant power supply, even at low levels. The flash is equipped with standby and auto power-off functions to save power and extend the life of the flash.
